Ok, jetzt ist es also amtlich. Der Garagen-Glam Rocker Kyle Thomas, aka KING TUFF schaut auf seiner Deutschland Tour auch in Freiburg vorbei. Der Mann hat schon zusammen mit j.Mascis von Dinosaur Jr. die Gitarren geschrubbt und war Gründer zweier Bands, den Folk Freaks Feathers und den Stoner Rockern von Witch. Nun hat er beim legendären Sub Pop Label sein zweites Album unter dem Namen KING TUFF veröffentlicht, ein fettes Glam Rock Meisterwerk, dass die oberste Blogger Musikinstanz, das amerikanische Internet Magazine „Pitchfork“, veranlasste, ihn auf eine Stufe mit der unlängst verstorbenen Garagenrock Legende Jay Reatard oder Ty Seagull zu stellen. Und das ist nicht übertrieben, strotzt das aktuelle Album doch geradezu vor Energie und Kraft. Scheint auf jeden Fall ein herrlich schräger Vogel und gleichzeitiger innovativer Musiker zu sein, wie dieses wunderbare Video beweist.

Zuvor werden aus Brooklyn Your 33 Black Angels antreten. Auf MTV schreiben sie zu der Band folgendes:
The past few years have been an excellent time for garage-pysch, thanks to artists like Thee Oh Sees, the Fresh & Onlys, the Black Angels and Sic Alps. However, we haven’t heard much from Brooklyn’s voice within this recently (rehashed) scene, until now, with Your 33 Black Angels. They have a distinctly New York take on psychedelic pop, piling on distortion, delay, and reverb, where they reference past local institutions like the Velvet Underground in their lysergic-sopped drones. Their lead vocalist “JW” also recalls Lou Reed, when here he recites the lyrics with a mix of poetry and indifference in “Lucifer, Morning Star.” JW sings, “There’s not much between us but madness and violence and tears/ There’s not much holding us back except violence and diseases and years.” Lines like this have a dusty feel that lends the song a cryptic wisdom. Your 33 Black Angels may be drawing more inspiration from the past than looking forward, but their guitar-spun cuts are at least equipped to age well.
